Mastering the Art of Recall Training
Mastering the Art of Recall Training
A solid recall isn't just convenient — it's essential for your Border Collie's safety. Here's how to build one that never fails.
Why Recall Can Be Challenging
Border Collies are driven by movement and instinct. When something triggers their herding drive, their ears seem to switch off. That's why recall training requires special attention.
Building the Foundation
Step 1: Choose Your Word
Pick a unique recall word — something you won't accidentally use in conversation. 'Here!' or a whistle pattern works well.
Step 2: Make It Magical
Every single time your Border Collie responds to your recall word, they should receive something amazing — their favorite treat, enthusiastic praise, or a beloved toy.
Step 3: Start Easy
Begin in your living room with zero distractions. Gradually increase difficulty.
The Long Line Phase
Before testing off-leash recall, use a 30-foot long line. This gives freedom while maintaining safety and control.
Common Mistakes
- Calling them for 'negative' things (bath time, nail trims)
- Repeating the command
- Chasing when they don't respond
- Training only when convenient
The Golden Rule
Never, ever punish your Border Collie for coming when called — even if they took 10 minutes to respond. The act of coming should always be positive.
