Loose Leash Walking with Your Border Collie
Walks should be enjoyable, not a tug-of-war. Here's how to teach your energetic Border Collie to walk nicely beside you.
Why Border Collies Pull
- They're fast and excited
- The world is stimulating
- Pulling has been accidentally rewarded
- They have places to be!
Equipment Matters
Recommended:
- Front-clip harness
- 6-foot leash
- Treat pouch
Avoid:
- Retractable leashes (teach pulling!)
- Choke or prong collars
The Foundation: Be Interesting
Before stepping outside:
- Practice inside with no distractions
- Reward frequently for being at your side
- Change direction randomly
- Make staying near you the best game
Core Techniques
The Tree Method
- When the leash tightens, stop completely
- Wait silently until the leash loosens
- Continue walking
- Repeat consistently
The U-Turn
- When pulling starts, say 'this way'
- Turn and walk the opposite direction
- Reward when they catch up
- Teaches checking in with you
The 300 Peck Method
- Treat for every step at your side
- Gradually reduce frequency
- Builds strong position habit
Managing High Energy
Before walks:
- Mental exercise (training, puzzles)
- A quick game of fetch
- Sniff work in the yard
Realistic Expectations
- This takes weeks or months
- Some days are better than others
- Adolescents may 'forget' training
- Consistency is everything
The 'Go Sniff' Cue
Teach a release word for sniff breaks. This gives them permission to explore while maintaining that walks have structure.
