Recall Training: Getting Your Border Collie to Come Every Time

Recall Training: Getting Your Border Collie to Come Every Time
A reliable recall isn't just convenient — it's a lifesaver. Here's how to build a recall so strong your Border Collie will leave squirrels behind to get back to you.
Why Border Collies Need Great Recall
Their herding instinct can lead them to:
- Chase vehicles, bikes, or joggers
- Pursue wildlife
- Cover vast distances quickly
Foundation: Making Yourself the Best Option
Recall starts with being more exciting than distractions:
- High-value treats: Real meat, cheese, or hot dogs
- Genuine excitement: Be the party they want to join
- Never punish a return: Even if it took forever
The Recall Building Blocks
Name Recognition
Say their name. Click and treat when they look. Repeat until their name snaps their attention to you.
Short Distance Recalls
- Get just a few feet away
- Crouch down, open your arms
- Use your recall word enthusiastically
- Celebrate the return!
Adding Distance
Gradually increase distance, always setting them up for success.
The Emergency Recall
Create a special word for true emergencies:
- Choose an unusual word
- Use ONLY for practice and real emergencies
- Reward with jackpot treats (lots of them!)
- Practice monthly to keep it sharp
Proofing Against Distractions
Progress through levels:
- Quiet room
- Backyard
- Low-distraction outdoor area
- Medium distractions
- High distractions (but on a long line!)
Never Do These
- Call them for something unpleasant
- Repeat the cue multiple times
- Chase them if they don't come
- Practice off-leash before they're ready
Games That Build Recall
- Ping Pong: Two people call back and forth
- Hide and Seek: Hide and call
- Surprise Parties: Random recalls with amazing rewards
