Best Tug Toys for Border Collies (2026)

Bond-building, drive-channelling, impulse-control-building play

Updated November 2026

Tug is one of the most powerful tools in a Border Collie owner's toolkit — but only when done right. The right tug toy builds an extraordinary bond, provides a physically and mentally satisfying outlet, and — when used with proper rules — improves impulse control more effectively than almost any other exercise. Here are the best options.

Buyer's Guide

The Myth That Tug Makes Dogs Aggressive

Modern behavioural science has comprehensively debunked the idea that tug causes aggression. The opposite is true — tug played with rules is one of the most powerful impulse control exercises available. It builds drive, deepens bond, provides an outlet for frustration, and dramatically improves a dog's responsiveness to 'drop it' commands.

The Rules That Make Tug a Training Tool

Tug only works as a training tool if YOU control the game: 1) You start and end every session. 2) The toy is yours — it lives with you, not scattered on the floor. 3) 'Out' means immediate release — reward the release. 4) Teeth on skin = game ends instantly. 5) Require a Sit or Down before restarting. These rules turn play into impulse control practice.

Tug as a Training Reward

For high-drive Border Collies, a 10-second tug session is more motivating than any treat. Sport dog handlers discovered decades ago that using a tug toy as a training reward produces faster learning, stronger associations, and better retention than food alone. Try replacing food rewards with tug for high-value behaviours and watch engagement explode.

Bungee vs. Rigid Tug: Which Is Safer?

For intensive play or large, powerful dogs, bungee tugs are significantly safer. The elastic absorbs the shock load that would otherwise transfer directly to your dog's neck and spine. For puppies and moderate-play dogs, rigid rope toys are fine. For sport or intense daily play, invest in a bungee tug.
